The Geology Program has a long tradition of providing educational, research and internship opportunities for students. Our current strengths are in Sedimentary Petrology, Petroleum Geology, Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, Structural Geology, Tectonics and GIS/Remote Sensing. A new program in Meteoritics/Planetary Geology was developed in cooperation with the Monnig Meteorite Gallery. Faculty members have ongoing, field-based research programs in Oklahoma and Texas (especially the spectacular Big Bend region in West Texas), as well as in Africa, Scotland, Baja California and the Sierras in California. Both undergraduate and graduate students are involved in much of this research. Currently the program has an emphasis on petroleum-related subsurface geological studies, with the Barnett Shale in the Fort Worth Basin of particular current interest. Close ties to the TCU Energy Institute provide a range of energy-related courses and research experiences for students.
